A man who authorities say stole seven checks from a Mandeville home for recovering addicts was booked last week, a year after the thefts occurred.

Ryan M. Schexnayder, 28, of Baton Rouge, was a resident at an Oxford House sobriety center on West Beach Parkway in Mandeville when several checks were reported missing in May 2014, according to Lt. Gerald Sticker, a spokesman for the Mandeville Police Department.

Suspicion fell on Schexnayder, who had left the home without giving any notice.

Subsequent investigation showed that seven checks totaling more than $2,000 had been stolen and cashed at Mandeville-area businesses. Security videos show Schexnayder cashing the checks, Sticker said.

Mandeville detectives obtained a warrant for Schexnayder’s arrest in May 2014, but they didn’t find him until last week, when he was located in custody in East Baton Rouge Parish on unrelated charges. He was booked Friday into the St. Tammany Parish Jail, where he remained as of Tuesday morning.
