Two men were shot to death Monday as gunfire ripped through the morning calm on Bright Drive in New Orleans East.

Broken glass and police evidence cones littered the scene hours later.

Police responded to a report of shots fired about 5:45 a.m. They discovered the men’s bodies inside a black Kia Cadenza, according to Officer Garry Flot, a Police Department spokesman.

Minutes after a coroner’s van arrived in the 4800 block of Bright Drive, so did a red taxi carrying a woman in a purple cap.

The woman wept and screamed, “Oh God, no!” as the men’s bodies were put in the van.

One neighbor, who declined to give his name, said he first thought someone was knocking on his back door as a barrage of shots rang out.

His girlfriend was walking out the front door for work at the time, he said. “I grabbed her and pulled her back and told her that somebody’s shooting,” the man said.

Neighbors milled about the suburban street staring at the black car.

Kirk Woods said he was visiting for Memorial Day from Richmond, Texas, when his brother woke him to tell him about the shooting.

The double killing brought back memories of a shooting he witnessed as a child in the St. Bernard housing development decades ago, he said.

Woods said his mother moved to New Orleans East in the 1990s to escape the crime of the inner city, but the violence followed.

Woods left the city after Hurricane Katrina. He said he has one son remaining in the city, and “I’m trying to get them all out of here.”

Police did not immediately release the victims’ names or a potential motive.

Homicide Detective Gregory Johnson is in charge of the investigation and can be reached at (504) 658-5300.
