A Marrero man has been booked on second-degree murder after reporting to police his girlfiend's 2-year-old son fell and hit his head. The boy later died.

According to a Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office release, Seth Redell, 27, reported an unresponsive child, identified as 2-year-old Hayden Umbenhower, about 8 a.m. April 24.

Redell reported that he was watching his girlfriend's child while she was out of town, and the boy fell and hit his head near the back door of the housein the 600 block of Allo Avenue in Marrero, leaving him unconscious. The child was transported to University Medical Center for emergency surgery but died Friday.

Redell said he took the child to the shower after the fall and ran water over his head in an attempt to revive him. However, attending physicians determined Hayden had suffered subdural hematomas, brain swelling and retinal hemorrhaging in both eyes, which they said was consistent with shaken baby syndrome.

Responding officers also reported an “obvious and heavy odor” of marijuana in the home, along with marijuana and drug paraphernalia in plain view.

Redell’s story about what happened to the child changed several times, deputies said.

He was initially booked on second-degree cruelty to a juvenile and posted bond.

After the physicians' report, a warrant was issued for second-degree murder. Redell was taken into custody at his parents’ home in Harvey, where he was staying.

He has prior arrests for possession of marijuana along with aggravated robbery in 2007 in Ohio, the JPSO said.
