French Market gala to be held on June 4

The French Market Inaugural Summer Harvest Gala will be held from 6:30 to 10 p.m. June 4 at the French Market.

Abita beer will be pairing its “harvest” beers with dishes created by chefs from La Petite Grocery, Peche Seafood Grill and other local restaurants. Cane & Table will offer handcrafted cocktails.

Guitarist John Rankin and the Creole String Beans will perform during the cocktail reception and dinner.

The French Market’s Creole Tomato Festival, the market’s signature annual event, will be presented June 7-8.

Throughout the weekend, 14 food booths featuring Creole tomato dishes will line French Market Place. Two music stages will showcase 16 bands including Billy Iuso & Friends, the Honeypots, Erica Falls, and Kid Merv & All that Jazz.

There also will be hourly cooking demonstrations, free kids activities in Dutch Alley, music workshops and interactive craft booths. Customers who spend $30 or more in any of the French Market’s retail shops will receive a complimentary bag of Creole tomatoes.

Broadmoor health fair to offer programs

A health fair, sponsored by Second Harvest Food Bank, will be held Saturday in Broadmoor.

This first-time community health fair will offer free screenings and access to a host of programs sponsored by participating organizations.

It will feature cooking lessons, assistance with food stamp applications, vision and dental screenings, blood pressure screenings and other health services.

The event will be held between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the Rosa F. Keller Library, 4200 S. Broad St.

Participants are encouraged to bring a state-issued ID because some programs may have eligibility requirements.

Lowe’s to give away hurricane supplies

Lowe’s hardware store will be distributing free hurricane supplies in LaPlace neighborhoods from 10 a.m. to noon Thursday.

Employee volunteers from the Lowe’s store in Metairie will distribute hundreds of “hurricane prep buckets” containing flashlights, batteries, tarps, work gloves and other emergency supplies.

Each kit will also have a list of 10 important steps to safeguard your family and home in times of disaster.

Hurricane season officially begins June 1.

Toussaint to perform at jazz camp fundraiser

New Orleans musician Allen Toussaint will perform at a fundraising reception Thursday for the Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong Summer Jazz Camp.

Proceeds from the event will go toward scholarships for the camp.

The fundraiser will be held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the home of Joseph and Stephanie Bruno, 1015 S. Carrollton Ave.

The campaign is co-chaired by Toussaint, the Brunos and John and Dathel Georges. John Georges is the owner of The New Orleans Advocate.

Entertainment will also include performances from Louis Armstrong Summer Jazz Camp faculty, alumni and students.
