KEMPER SCHOLAR AT XAVIER: Tyler Despenza, a freshman English major at Xavier University of Louisiana, has been selected for the prestigious Kemper Scholars Program. Kemper Scholars receive annual scholarships up to $10,000 based on need during their sophomore, junior and senior years of college.

Despenza, a graduate of Benjamin Franklin High School in New Orleans, was chosen for the honor by the James S. Kemper Foundation based on her excellent academic standing, her commitment to the liberal arts, and her expressed interest in exploring careers in organizational leadership and management in business or the nonprofit sector.

Program participants receive stipends to cover the costs of their work as interns in major nonprofit organizations in Chicago during the summer following their sophomore year, during which the scholars are placed in full-time administrative positions where they can learn about such things as financial management, organizational strategy, fundraising and nonprofit administration. During the Chicago summer, scholars live in the same apartment residence hall and participate in a weekly seminar while having opportunities to explore the cultural, historical and entertainment aspects of the city.
