Former Alcorn State wide receiver and New Orleans high school football standout Tollette 'Tonka' George was fatally shot in Algiers on Friday night.

New Orleans Police Department officers responded to a call shortly before 10 p.m. for aggravated battery near a shooting around Vespasian Street and Lauradale Drive.

Upon getting to the scene, officers noticed an unidentified man — George — with multiple gunshot wounds lying on the street. George was pronounced dead at the scene.

George was a standout at Edna Karr High School in New Orleans before graduating in 2011. He then played football and baseball for five years at Alcorn State.

George led Alcorn State in receiving in 2013 with 637 yards on 52 receptions.

In a report from WWL-TV, Athletics Director Derek Horne said George was an excellent student and athlete before graduating last May.

"The Alcorn family is deeply saddened by Tonka's death, and we are praying for his family and all who knew and loved him," Horne said in the report.
