A rare streak of 10 days without a murder in New Orleans ended after a woman was arrested for the early Tuesday morning stabbing death of a man in the 3000 block of Clouet Street.
Police said 5th District officers responded to a report of a man bleeding profusely on the porch of a home on the block at around 1 a.m. When they got there they found the victim, 39, lying unresponsive, suffering from several stabs. He died on the scene.
Earlier in the night, police said, Shamira Menendez, 37, had been on the porch with the victim and his family members. After family members went inside to sleep, Menendez came running inside to say that the victim had been stabbed.
Family members and evidence on the scene led police to arrest Menendez, authorities said. Police believe a kitchen knife was used to kill the victim.
As one man washed the front porch of the house down with a hose on Tuesday morning, acquaintances of the slain man declined to comment on his death.
The victim’s death was the second homicide this year near the former Desire housing development. On June 3, police believe, Melissa Hunter was shot and killed by her boyfriend Kernell Harrell in the 3600 block of Metropolitan Street. Harrell later killed himself in a Gentilly motel after a stand-off with a SWAT team.
Homicide Detective Gregory Johnson is leading the investigation and can be reached at (504) 658-5300.
