A man and his son were shot and killed while repairing a pickup truck in the driveway of their Gentilly home Thursday, the first two murders of 2015.

The men, who have not yet been identified, were shot around noon, according to the New Orleans Police Department.

Officers arriving on the scene in the 200 block of Warrington Drive found a 64-year-old man lying on the porch and a 42-year-old man in the driveway. The older man was pronounced dead on the scene, while his son was taken to the hospital, where he died.

No further information was available Thursday, and investigators were busy interviewing witnesses, gathering evidence and trying to establish a possible motive.

The daytime fatal shootings, which occurred just 12 hours into the new year, shocked residents of the quiet neighborhood just outside of Dillard University’s campus.

Murders have been down for the last three years — 2014 finished down slightly to 150 — but New Orleans still has one of the highest murder rates in the country, and the number of attempted murders increased by 23 percent last year.

NOPD spokesman Frank Robertson said Homicide Detective Rayell Johnson is in charge of the investigation and can be reached at (504) 658-5300.

Citizens with information that could help solve this crime can call Crimestoppers at (504) 822-1111 or toll-free 1-877-903-STOP.
