Operation Photo Rescue, a nonprofit organization of volunteers, will be in Metairie later this month to digitally copy photographs for those whose pictures were damaged by Hurricane Katrina.

From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Aug. 28 and from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Aug. 29, OPR representatives will be at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 W. Napoleon Ave., Metairie.

Anyone with storm-damaged photos may bring as many as 25 photos to be evaluated for restoration. Photos that can be repaired will be digitally captured with high-end camera equipment and later restored and printed. Restored photos will be mailed to owners at no cost. The original photo remains with the owner.

OPR was founded in January 2006 by photojournalists Dave Ellis and Becky Sell. The nonprofit has grown into a network of volunteers from across the United States who have returned more than 10,000 restored photos to survivors of hurricanes, tornadoes, floods and wildfires.

Instructions on photo care can be found on OPR’s website at www.operationphotorescue.org. For more information, call Chris Smith at (504) 889-8143 or email wcsmith@jefferson.lib.la.us.

New youth group

The newly organized youth ministry at St. Philip Neri Church is hosting a games and movie night from 8 p.m. to midnight Saturday in the parishioner’s center, 6500 Kawanee Ave., Metairie.

The group is open to all students in eighth grade through high school who live in St. Philip Neri’s parish and also for students who do not have a youth ministry in their church parish.

There will be games, relay races and snacks. The movie “McFarland, USA” will be shown.

The event is free.

“Members had a great time at a recent summer party and barbecue,” said Erin Wright, youth ministry director. “The event on Saturday is sure to be as much fun, so grab a friend and enjoy the last days of summer.”
