Dr. Rishikesh Chavan, an oncologist at Tulane University Health Sciences Center, will lead Sunday afternoon meditation workshops beginning next month at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 W. Napoleon Ave., Metairie.
The workshops, which are free and open to the public, will begin at 2 p.m. starting Sunday and are ongoing.
Meditation is a devotional exercise of or leading to contemplation. It is a contemplative discourse, usually on a religious or philosophical subject.
The goals of the library program are to help people relax, reduce stress and get connected to inner feelings of love and abundance; to help improve focus and overall performance; and to promote harmony by creating peace.
Each session will include a five-minute welcome and introduction to meditation, 10 minutes of relaxation, 20 minutes of meditation and 10 minutes of questions and discussion.
Chavan works at Tulane Lakeside Hospital in Metairie, where he specializes in pediatric hematology-oncology. He also is affiliated with Children’s Hospital and Tulane Medical Center.

Summer fun at Lafreniere
The spray pad adjacent to the carousel at Lafreniere Park, 3000 Downs Boulevard, Metairie, is open seven days a week from noon to 7 p.m. until Aug. 9.
It will then open only from noon to 7 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays until Sept. 27.
The cost is $5 per person per 90-minute session. Food, drinks, glass containers, toys and floats are prohibited.
The spray pad sprays more than 135 gallons of water per minute and covers approximately 4,000 square feet of surface.
It’s open to children 10 and younger and includes in-ground water spray features alternating with five above-ground water spray attractions, including water cannons.
