Man shot after he is said to threaten others
A 45-year-old Houma man was shot Friday in Jefferson Parish after he allegedly threatened several other people with a rifle, the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office said.
A group of seven men ages 15 to 21 were walking about noon in a wooded area near August Lane in Lafitte, a short distance from Jean Lafitte Highway, Col. John Fortunato said. The group said they noticed a man, later identified as Percel C. Banks, fishing and drinking. Banks, who was armed with a 22-caliber rifle, approached the group and offered to share the fish he caught with them.
As they continued talking, Banks allegedly became intoxicated and began speaking about committing violence. He eventually took a hammer from the group and retreated to his nearby tent, where he allegedly began threatening the young men with his rifle. As they began running away, Banks started firing at them, Fortunato said.
One of the group then began firing a shotgun into the air. When Banks continued to fire at the victims, the man with the shotgun fired at Banks, striking him in the lower leg. One of the group ran to the nearest residence and called 911.
Responding officers took Banks to the hospital. His injury was not considered life-threatening.
Warrants have been issued for Banks’ arrest on seven counts of aggravated assault with a firearm. He will be booked upon his release from the hospital.
