Police probing shooting on Washington Avenue
New Orleans police are investigating a fatal shooting that took place Sunday afternoon in Central City.
Responding to a report of gunshots fired about 12:30 p.m., officers found a 27-year-old man lying dead on the sidewalk in the 2000 block of Washington Avenue.
The man’s name was withheld pending notification of family members. The Coroner’s Office will perform an autopsy.

Car passenger dies after Uptown wreck
A 25-year-old man died Sunday morning when the car he was riding in slammed into a pole on Magazine Street in Uptown New Orleans.
Police arrested Luke Allison, 25, the driver of the car, and booked him on a count of vehicular homicide, according to Officer Garry Flot, a police spokesman.
The victim’s name has not been released.
Allison and his passenger were driving westbound on Magazine Street at a high rate of speed about 12:40 a.m. in a silver, two-door Honda Civic. Allison lost control in the 5600 block and ran into a metal pole. His passenger was thrown from the car.
The passenger was taken to a hospital, where he died. Allison also was taken to the hospital for minor injuries.
Arrest records show Allison is being held without bond. Blood and alcohol test results are pending.
Young child found abandoned in stroller
New Orleans police are investigating the circumstances surrounding a baby who was found abandoned in a stroller Saturday afternoon.
Police said officers responded at 5:20 p.m. to a call about a baby left in a stroller in the 2600 block of Martin Luther King Boulevard. When they arrived, concerned citizens said the boy, who appeared to be about 1 year old, had been there alone for almost an hour.
Officers canvassed the area and tried to find the baby’s parents but weren’t successful. The baby was taken to the Department of Child and Family Services.
About 11 p.m., the baby’s mother arrived at the 6th District station, police said. She told officers she had a medical condition and had asked a friend to watch the baby.
No charges have been filed against the mother, and police were looking Sunday for the woman left in charge of the baby.
The little boy remained with protective services.
Man cut with machete during argument
A 40-year-old man was cut with a machete Saturday morning in Mid-City.
The man was involved in an argument with a group of people about 8 a.m. when one of them produced a machete and cut him, New Orleans police said.
Police investigating Algiers armed robbery
Two men were robbed at gunpoint Saturday night in Algiers, according to New Orleans police.
The victims, ages 46 and 31, were riding their bikes about 10 p.m. near Westpark Drive and Cypress Acres Drive.
When the pair approached the intersection, three armed men jumped out from behind some trees and demanded their money. They fled with the victims’ wallets and a cellphone.
Man struck during carjacking in Algiers
New Orleans police are investigating a carjacking that happened Saturday night in Algiers.
A 27-year-old man was in the 100 block of Pinewood Court about 10 p.m. when he was approached from behind and struck in the head.
Someone then took his car keys and phone before driving off in his 2005 Honda Accord.
Police investigating Gentilly home invasion
A home invasion was reported Saturday night in the 3000 block of Gentilly Boulevard, New Orleans police said.
A 61-year-old man was sitting in his living room about 10:30 p.m. when someone knocked at the door. When he answered it, two men, one armed with a gun, forced their way in.
One of the men struck the victim in the face with the gun while the other searched his kitchen and bedroom.
The pair fled with his money and a computer.
Cutting reported Sunday in Jefferson
A man was cut Sunday near Jefferson Highway, according to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office.
The incident was reported about 5 p.m. in the 200 block of Jules Avenue. The man’s injuries weren’t life-threatening.
Man robbed, shot Saturday in Mid-City
A 25-year-old man was robbed at gunpoint and then shot Saturday night in Mid-City, police said.
He was approached about 8 p.m. by two men he didn’t know. The men took money from his pockets, then fired one shot, striking him. He was taken to a hospital for treatment.
