New Orleans Pelicans head coach Alvin Gentry was joined by Pierre the Pelican to inspire more than 100 youths from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southeast Louisiana to stay in shape, to eat right and to stay hydrated. The Fit Fest was hosted by Chevron on July 8 at the Smoothie King Center.
Gentry told the youth that the Pelicans team members are always fed properly throughout the day.
“It’s really important that they eat healthy foods because it not only gives them physical health but health for the mind,” he said. “As young as you are, you have to start now, eating those vegetables, spinach and all those things you don’t think are good for you,” he said.
Sakari Morrison, a representative from Chevron, spoke to the youth about proper health. She told them that eating healthy helps them with their minds.
“We want you to be able to use your minds and achieve anything that you want to achieve. In order to do that, you need to be healthy and fit,” she said.
The emcee for the event was John DeShazier, radio broadcaster for the New Orleans Pelicans.
The Swoop Troop and staff provided the youth with T-shirts and sweat bands.
