Whoever shot a veteran NOPD officer and sent him to the hospital Sunday night is still on the loose, the department said Monday.

Police were still searching for the occupants of a brown or gold-colored SUV that pulled up next to Cmdr. Derek Frick’s unmarked police vehicle in the 4200 block of Alvar Street about 7:45 p.m. and shot him.

Police believe there may have been several people inside the SUV. They have given no word on a potential motive for the shooting, which occurred near the site of the former Desire housing development.

Frick was off duty, not in uniform, and on his way to visit his father at the time, police said.

Frick, a 25-year NOPD veteran, is listed in stable condition at University Medical Center. The wounds to his neck and jaw are not considered life-threatening.
