A 50-year-old man died around 2 a.m. Sunday in a three-vehicle crash on Interstate 10 at Cleary Avenue in Jefferson Parish, a State Police spokeswoman said.
Mauricio Vega, of Kenner, was examining his 2002 Toyota Camry after it stalled in the left lane of I-10 east because of mechanical issues, Trooper First Class Melissa Matey said in a news release.
Erik Francois, 19, of LaPlace, was driving a 2003 Chevrolet Monte Carlo in the left lane and tried to avoid Vega’s Toyota by steering left, Matey said.
Francois’ Chevrolet struck the rear of the Toyota and Vega, and pushed the Toyota toward the left center lane, Matey said.
Edward Wiggins, 44, of Charlotte, N.C., was driving a 2009 Freightliner tractor trailer in the left center lane when, in an attempt to avoid the Toyota, he swerved onto the left shoulder and struck the rear of the Toyota and Chevrolet, Matey said.
Vega was pronounced dead at the scene, Matey said.
Wiggins was taken to a hospital with minor injuries, Matey said. Francois did not suffer any injuries.
Troopers are awaiting toxicology results for Vega following an autopsy, Matey said.
A chemical test showed no alcohol in Francois’ system, Matey said. Troopers are awaiting State Police Crime Lab test results of a blood sample from Wiggins.
The crash remains under investigation, Matey said.
