Two 16-year-old boys have been arrested for the murder of an L.W. Higgins High School student on Oct. 19, according to Westwego Police Department Lt. Eric Orlando.

Both have both been booked on counts of second-degree murder for the early morning killing of Kevin Thomas Jr. Investigators believe they had some sort of dispute with Thomas over a stolen gun, which police found in his room after obtaining a search warrant.

Thomas was shot in the back around 12:30 a.m. in the 1000 block of Sycamore Drive in the Tanglewood Apartment complex, police said.

“We got word from witnesses that had direct information acknowledging that they were specifically told it had everything to do with the stolen firearm,” said Orlando.

Police interviewed friends and acquaintances of the victim to turn the case, he said. One juvenile who wanted to remain anonymous told police that one of the suspects had confessed the killing.

The first suspect was arrested at 2:30 a.m. in the 1700 block of Newport Street in Kenner, he said. The second teen turned himself in around noon on Saturday.

Orlando said the two juveniles can be charged as adults, but that decision will be left up to the office of District Attorney Paul Connick Jr.

Thomas’s funeral was on Monday, according to an obituary. He is survived by his parents, who lived with him in the apartment complex where he died, and two siblings.
