Orleans Parish Coroner Jeffrey Rouse has classified the Sunday death of Cesar Rivera, 27, as a homicide.
Police said 6th District officers responding to a report of a disturbance in the 4300 block of Washington Avenue about 4:30 a.m. found Rivera lying in the street unconscious, with a wound to the head.
Witnesses told police that five men had attacked him with a pipe and fists. He then hit his head on a vehicle and fell to the ground, they said. He was taken to the hospital, where he died the next day.
Police had not issued a release about Rivera’s death until Thursday, after Rouse made his classification, but 2nd District Cmdr. Paul Noel said Rivera died outside a recently opened nightclub.
Homicide Detective Gregory Johnson is in charge of the investigation and can be reached at (504) 658-5300.
