The Louisiana Bridge Association, along with Alzheimer’s Residential Care Homes, is hosting a day of bridge to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Association beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday at 2709 Edenborn Ave., Metairie.

Eight games are planned, and players can compete in any or all of the games. Each game will last about 90 minutes and the cost is $10 per game. All proceeds will be donated to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be provided to all bridge players free of charge.

4-H inductee

Madge Borne, a retired Jefferson Parish teacher and 4-H volunteer leader, was recently inducted into the 4-H Hall of Fame.

The induction ceremony was held at the Louisiana 4-H Museum in Mansura.

The museum was established in 2008 in Avoyelles Parish, where the Louisiana 4-H Youth Development Program began in 1908.

Borne served as a Jefferson Parish organizational 4-H leader for 17 years and was on the parish 4-H Foundation and advisory boards for three years. She worked on such programs as recruiting fifth-graders into the urban 4-H program and promoting environmental projects including field trips and tree plantings for Arbor Day.

To help members understand environmental responsibility, the club sponsored recycling of newspapers, cans and phone books; and made bird feeders and birdhouses.

Each year, the club also publishes and sells recipes from the club-level commodity cookery and ambassador contest and donates the money to a children’s hospital.

Borne was named the outstanding 4-H leader in 2009, and her club received the Outstanding 4-H Service Award and the first-place club award for 14 years.

“It’s really rewarding to make a difference in the lives of children,” Borne said.
