NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The New Orleans Mission says more women are homeless in New Orleans, so it plans to double the size of its women’s center and hire a full-time women’s therapist.

The organization says overall homelessness is down in the city, but the rate of homeless women is up 66 percent since 2012. Executive director David Bottner said at a news conference Tuesday that 92 percent of the homeless women in New Orleans have been physically or sexually abused.

The shelter has raised $50,000 of the $300,000 needed to expand its women’s center from 18 beds to 38, and to hire a therapist. Gardner Realtors is helping with fundraising.
