Man arrested after traffic fatality
A 21-year-old man was arrested after hitting a car and fatally injuring a woman during a traffic accident Saturday morning in Uptown, New Orleans police said.
Logan Calhoun was driving at Josephine and Laurel streets about 8:15 a.m. when he disregarded a stop sign and hit a 40-year-old woman’s car, police said. The woman’s car flipped over and hit a tree. She was taken to a local hospital in critical condition and later died from her injuries.
Court records show Calhoun was booked with vehicular homicide and is being held on $200,000 bail.
Authorities have not released the victim’s name.
Woman sought in N.O. East robbery
New Orleans police are asking for help finding 25-year-old Ashley Wooten, a woman wanted in connection with a robbery that happened Jan. 18 in New Orleans East.
A 25-year-old man told police he was approached by Wooten about 10:30 p.m. in the parking lot of an apartment complex in the 12300 block of the Interstate 10 Service Road. Moments after he started talking to her, a man walked up, implied he had a pistol in his pocket and demanded money, according to Officer Frank Robertson, a Police Department spokesman.
Fearing for his safety, the victim handed over $160 in cash. He then drove with Wooten to an ATM in the 7000 block of Bullard Avenue after the robbers demanded they get more cash, police said.
According to Robertson, the victim withdrew $200 in cash and gave it to Wooten. He then drove her back to the apartment complex, where she and the man fled in a black SUV.
The unidentified male robber is described as a black man with a muscular build and light complexion. He was wearing a gray long-sleeved shirt and blue jeans.
Man shot Saturday night in Uptown
A 39-year-old man was shot Saturday night in Uptown, according to police.
The victim was near Broadway and Fig Street about 7:30 p.m. when he was shot, New Orleans police spokesman Frank Robertson said.
When officers responded to reports of shots fired in the area, they found he had suffered multiple gunshot wounds.
Man stabbed in the French Quarter
A 27-year-old man was stabbed in the French Quarter early Sunday morning, New Orleans police said.
The victim got into an argument with a co-worker in the 500 block of Decatur Street just after midnight, police said. The co-worker called her boyfriend, and the boyfriend and the victim then had a fight that ended with the 27-year-old being stabbed.
32-year-old arrested in sexual assault
A 32-year-old man was arrested and booked on a count of rape Saturday morning after an incident that happened on City Park Avenue in Mid-City, New Orleans police said.
The sexual assault was reported about 7:30 a.m. in the 300 block of City Park Avenue. According to police, the female victim was sexually assaulted by Chad Sanders, who was described as a “male acquaintance.”
Family pet dies Sunday in Tammany fire
A family pet died in a residential fire Sunday morning in St. Tammany Parish, according to a news release.
Firefighters from St. Tammany Fire District 12 responded to the fire about 10 a.m. at 20 Dewberry Road, just north of Covington, according to the release. A neighbor heading to church saw heavy smoke and flames coming from the building and dialed 911.
The first fire truck arrived seven minutes later to find the whole residence engulfed in flames. The owner was at work at the time, and his family was heading out of town for a family vacation. The owner arrived at the scene after neighbors called him.
Aside from the pet, there were no casualties.
Four engines, two water tankers, one rescue unit, four support vehicles and one ambulance responded from District 12 with a total of 21 personnel. Fire Districts 6 and 8 provided an engine and tanker as well as personnel.
The fire is under investigation, but because of the extent of the damage it is likely that the cause will remain undetermined, according to the release.
JPSO: Woman robbed Sunday in Marrero
An armed robbery was reported Sunday afternoon in Marrero, according to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office.
A woman was robbed in the 4400 block of Leo Kerner Parkway. The incident was reported just before 3:30 p.m.
The woman wasn’t injured.
