A man tried to kill his estranged wife and her 4-year-old son at St. Charles Borromeo School in Destrehan and later killed himself by jumping off Interstate 10 in New Orleans on Monday, authorities said.
Capt. Pat Yoes, a spokesman for the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office, said Mengkai Zhang, 47, of Destrehan, tried to kill his wife, from whom he was recently separated, and her 4-year-old son about 4:40 p.m. at the school.
Zhang struck the pair while they were standing outside their car, he said. Zhang then fled from the scene, hitting two other parked vehicles with occupants along the way, deputies said.
Zhang’s wife, her son and one person in a parked vehicle were taken to the hospital with minor injuries, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
Yoes said deputies “responded immediately, but he was gone.”
“The school is located right at I-310, so he probably just jumped on the interstate and made his way to New Orleans pretty quick,” Yoes said.
Shortly after 6 p.m., the New Orleans Police Department responded to reports of a suicide on Interstate 10 westbound near the Industrial Canal bridge. Police believe Zhang jumped off the interstate, killing himself.
Yoes said Zhang had no history of domestic violence or open restraining orders of which he was aware.
