A suspect in the slayings of a mother and daughter Tuesday morning in New Orleans East was arrested Thursday in Florida, police said.

New Orleans Police Department spokesman Tyler Gamble said Dwayne Martin is the lone suspect in a shooting spree that left Martin’s girlfriend, Walesha Williams, 25, and her 8-year-old daughter, Paris Williams, dead. A 39-year-old friend of Williams was wounded in the attack and remains at Interim LSU Hospital.

Martin and Williams had been dating since the fall but had known each other since middle school, according to Williams’ cousin, Erica Williams.

Walesha Williams moved back to New Orleans last year from Texas to care for an ailing grandmother, who died last weekend from cancer.

Martin was arrested by U.S. marshals and Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office deputies in Milton, Florida, and New Orleans police are in the process of extraditing him back to New Orleans, Gamble said.

Police found Walesha Williams’ friend at a home in the 14000 block of Duane Road just before 1 a.m. Tuesday, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound . The friend, who had made her way to a neighboring residence, directed officers to the home where Williams and her daughter had been shot, according to police.

The friend apparently had “played dead” as the shooter made his way through the home, including shooting the child in the head. Martin also reportedly grabbed Walesha Williams’ cellphone and money before fleeing.

Martin served six months in Orleans Parish Prison in 2012 after being convicted of four counts of resisting arrest with force, four counts of battery of a police officer, one count of simple escape and one count of resisting a officer. He also pleaded guilty to simple battery in 2010, and he has other arrests on burglary, theft and felony carnal knowledge of a juvenile, though all of those charges were dropped.
