NOPD: Bud’s Broiler employees fight robber

An armed robbery was partially thwarted late Sunday when Bud’s Broiler employees fought a man attempting to rob the popular hamburger and hot dog eatery, police said.

Just before 11 p.m. Sunday, New Orleans police said, Ismael “Mike” Naranjo, 43, entered the business at 500 City Park Ave. and ordered employees to give him money from the cash register. He then went around the counter and began removing money from the register himself, police said.

As he tried to flee, police said, two employees wrestled him to the ground and tried to subdue him. Naranjo was able to escape and drive away in a white 1996 Dodge pickup. However, restaurant employees recovered some of the cash after the scuffle.

About 3:30 a.m., police received a call that a man sitting in a white truck was bleeding from the head in the 700 block of Howard Avenue. Officers said they recognized the vehicle as one reportedly used in the robbery, and Naranjo was transported to the hospital with lacerations to the head.

Evidence left at the scene linked Naranjo to the robbery, police said. A judge ordered him held on $20,000 bail Monday.

Police said they believe Naranjo is responsible for other similar robberies.
