The city says a “misunderstanding” caused the New Orleans Public Library to go a full year without paying rent to its only private landlord, a company that is now asking it to vacate its Mid-City branch by the end of October.

Library Executive Director Charles Brown told WWL-TV last week that he was blindsided by a letter dated Aug. 28 from the owners of the American Can Building, Georgia-based ACV VII LLC, which said the month-to-month lease arrangement that had been in place since October 2014 was over.

The Mid-City branch has to find a new location by the end of October.
