Two people were killed and five others wounded, including two children in critical condition, in a shooting that occurred just after 8 p.m. Sunday in the Lower 9th Ward, New Orleans police said.

Five people were sent to the hospital with three of them in critical condition, said Frank B. Robertson III, a New Orleans police spokesman. Two of those in critical condition included a 2-year-old and a 4-year-old.

The shooting occurred at 5445 Burgundy St., Robertson said.

Witnesses observed a late-model, dark-colored car, possibly a Honda Accord that may have had a Louisiana commercial license plate, occupied by several black men fleeing the scene, Robertson said.

No further information was available late Sunday.
