Diabetes support group meets at Touro
Valerie Burton, R.N., a certified diabetes educator, will lead a free diabetes support group meeting Tuesday, June 18, at 10 a.m. at in Suite C309, third floor of Touro Infirmary, 1401 Foucher St., New Orleans.
Participants will learn tips to keep their diabetes in control, including diet, glucose testing, medication management and exercise.

Gala to benefit March of Dimes
The March of Dimes will celebrate its 75th anniversary and honor 29 outstanding young professionals in the local community with its 27th annual Spotlight on Success Gala, hosted at Generations Hall, on Friday.
The event, which is open to the public, will also raise awareness and help fund research, education, vaccines and scientific breakthroughs for improving the health of babies everywhere.
The gala will feature cuisine from more than 15 New Orleans restaurants, an open bar, music by Bucktown All-Stars, and a silent auction.

Proceeds will benefit the March of Dimes campaign to reduce the rate of premature births, birth defects, and other serious threats to babies’ health. More than half a million babies are born too soon each year. Over 193 of these babies are born each week in Louisiana, and in New Orleans one in seven births are premature.
Transcending cancer through meditation
The Ochsner Cancer Institute’s Support Group will host “Transcending Cancer Through Meditation” for cancer patients and their families at 6 p.m. Thursday
at Ochsner Medical Center Cardiology Auditorium, New Concourse area, third floor.
The medical center is located at 1514 Jefferson Highway, Jefferson.
Dr. Indranill Basu Ray, an attending physician and assistant professor of medicine at Ochsner, a trained cardiologist and a mind-body expert, has practiced meditation for more than 20 years and has trained in the practice with multiple masters.
His expertise in the field is widely recognized, and he has been invited to present talks and conduct meditation workshops worldwide. Dr. Basu Ray promotes meditation as a supplement to standard medical therapy.
