One arrested, brother sought in two deaths
New Orleans police have arrested 22-year-old Dereck Meyers in connection with the deaths of 17-year-old Troy Maxwell and 24-year-old Jaunice Shine, the department said Friday. Officers are still seeking his brother, Michael Meyers, 20.
The incident occurred about 11:30 p.m. Oct. 3 near Baronne and Second streets. Officers responding to a reported vehicle accident found two victims suffering from gunshot wounds inside a silver 2006 Nissan Altima. Shine died at the scene, and Maxwell died later at a hospital.
The NOPD said Detective Timothy Bender identified the Meyers brothers as the perpetrators, and arrest warrants were obtained for them for first-degree murder.
Dereck Meyers was apprehended Friday morning at the St. Charles Avenue Probation and Parole Office.
Dereck is currently on parole for possession of Carisoprodol, a prescription drug, and possession with the intent to distribute marijuana.
Man suspected of distributing child porn
Authorities have arrested a 29-year-old Slidell man on accusations he downloaded and distributed child pornography.
Attorney General Buddy Caldwell’s office said Jeremy Petry was arrested Wednesday following an undercover investigation.
Caldwell’s office said Petry was booked on 25 counts of distributing pornography involving juveniles after authorities executed a search warrant at his home.
If convicted, Petry could face up to 20 years in prison on each count.
Girl, 16, allegedly raped on Lusher campus
A 16-year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted on the middle- and high-school campus of Lusher Charter School, New Orleans police said.
The incident was reported about 9:30 p.m. Thursday in the 5600 block of Freret Street, the site of Lusher’s campus. It was not clear whether that is when the assault is alleged to have occurred as well.
Officer Hilal Williams, a Police Department spokeswoman, said the victim was assaulted by an “unknown male” on the school grounds.
Lusher CEO Kathy Riedlinger said police have not contacted school officials about any incident on the campus, and she had received no reports of anything taking place at the school.
“This is an ongoing investigation, and we are working with NOPD,” Riedlinger wrote in an email to parents. “The safety of our students is our top priority.”
Two men arrested in attack, stabbing
Two men attacked and stabbed another man Thursday morning in the Mid-City area.
The attack happened about 8:45 a.m. in the 500 block of South Broad Street, according to a daily police log.
Police booked Stanton Guillory and Tyrone Harding, both 20, with aggravated battery.
Man rapes woman inside apartment unit
A man made his way into a woman’s apartment in the Mid-City area and raped her Thursday evening, police said.
The man got into the unit in the 2600 block of Gravier Street, about two blocks from NOPD headquarters, a little before 7 p.m. and sexually assaulted the 21-year-old victim.
Police provided no other details.
N.O. police investigate two armed robberies
New Orleans police on Friday were investigating the following armed robberies:
- 11:19 p.m. Thursday in the 8500 block of Chef Menteur Highway: The victim and a woman were inside a room in a motel when a man walked in. The intruder robbed the man of his belongings and fled with the woman.
- 3:31 a.m. Friday at Diana Street and Odeon Avenue: The victim was forced into his car at gunpoint at an unknown location and driven to this intersection.
The unknown robber took his possessions.
