The King’s Day celebration ceremonies, marking the official beginning of Carnival in New Orleans, were held at Mardi Gras World and Blaine Kern Studios Wednesday. The event had a gathering of members of various metro-area Mardi Gras Krewes, along with some of their throws.

The official poster from the Rex and the Zulu organizations were also unveiled, and Mayor Mitch Landrieu cut the first king cake of the season.

The Phunny Phorty Phellows took their annual streetcar ride to mark the start of the Carnival season. In the French Quarter, the Krewe de Jeanne d’Arc marched to honor Joan of Arc and the city’s French cultural heritage.
