New Orleans loves a good parade, but this may be the only parade dedicated to books.
The second annual Street Library Book Parade will be from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday in the Lower 9th Ward. Children’s books will be distributed to all along the route. To receive books, families can bring their children anywhere on the route between 12:30 and 3 p.m.
Children wishing to march in the parade must be accompanied by an adult and dressed as their favorite story character.
The parade will assemble at noon at the Guerrilla Garden, 624 Charbonnet St., and will leave at 12:30 p.m. heading to the first stop, House of Dance and Feathers, 1317 Tupelo St.; second stop, New Orleans Public Library, MLK Branch, 1611 Caffin Ave.; third stop, Galvez Goodies, 2036 Caffin Ave.; fourth stop, Free Mission Baptist Church, 1921 Egania St.; and ending at the Lower 9th Ward Street Library, 5445 Douglas St.
The parade is organized by Laurence Copel, whose library and bookmobile project gives free books to neighborhood youth. Books to Kids assists with the project.
Donations of books are still needed to give away at the parade. For information, contact Copel at (917) 549-6273.
