The family of a 4-year-old who accidentally shot himself in the neck Sunday is now speaking out about gun safety, according to a report.
"Keep those guns locked. That's what we need to do. Lock 'em up," the boy’s grandmother, who asked not to be identified, told WWL-TV.
The woman told WWL that her three grandchildren were visiting their New Orleans East home Sunday when she heard what sounded like “a firecracker.” Her husband found the 4-year-old in the bedroom. The child had opened the closed, unlocked nightstand next to the bed, WWL reported.
The boy had been expected to be discharged from the hospital Monday, WWL reported.
The grandmother stressed the importance of gun safety in her interview with WWL.
"When the children are around you gotta lock 'em up. You can talk to 'em all day, but they gonna still be inquisitive, because they children," she said.
