Bhumi Patel, a student in Tulane University's MD/MPH degree program, was shot during an armed robbery in Haiti on Thursday.

Patel sustained gun shot wounds to her hand and chest around 6:45 p.m. on Thursday in Port au Prince. She is in stable condition and is being treated at a Haitian hospital. She will be flown to a hospital in Miami to receive further treatment.

Patel just finished her first year as part of Tulane's School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine maternal and child health program. The program is located in Petionville, Haiti — located on the outskirts of Port au Prince. She is one of nine Tulane students enrolled in the program.

More details to come.
