After several-hours of negotiations with a SWAT team, a man peacefully surrendered to police after an armed incident on Wednesday evening in Algiers, the New Orleans Police Department reported.
Police identified the suspect as Damon Gilliam, 31.
At around 7 p.m., the NOPD sent a SWAT team to the 2200 block of Westbend Parkway after a domestic dispute escalated into an armed incident and a man fled into an apartment and refused to surrender, according to a release by the NOPD.
Police said Gilliam earlier began choking a 41-year-old woman, described as Gilliam's former girlfriend, outside a store. He then fled.
The woman’s 14-year-old son later spotted Gilliam at a bus stop, leading the man to point a handgun at the youth, police said.
Gilliam then fled into an apartment, where police sent a SWAT team to the scene and successfully negotiated his surrender at approximately 10:45 p.m., police said
Gilliam was booked on charges that included battery and aggravated assault. No one was injured during the incident, police said.
