• STROKE SCREENINGS: Through July 30, St. Bernard Parish Hospital is offering $49 screenings for stroke, which is the fourth-leading cause of death in St. Bernard Parish. Stroke health checkups are open to anyone in the community. The tests, which can be completed in 30 minutes, include assessments of blood pressure, cholesterol, triglyceride and glucose levels. It also includes an ultrasound of the carotid artery. The ultrasound is a painless measurement of waves to examine the structure and function of the carotid arteries in the neck. Appointments are required. Screening appointments are available from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday, and from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday. To schedule a stroke screening, call (504) 826-9600. The signs and symptoms of a stroke are sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, sudden confusion or trouble speaking, sudden trouble walking, dizziness or loss of balance, and a sudden severe headache with no known cause. Individuals experiencing these symptoms should seek medical help immediately. There is a small window of time when special drugs can be administered to lessen the effects of a stroke. St. Bernard Parish Hospital offers evaluations by Tulane neurologists through its Telestroke program in its emergency department, which is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The hospital is at 8000 West Judge Perez Drive in Chalmette. More information is available at sbph.net.
