A former Sheriff’s Office deputy who admitted smuggling contraband into Orleans Parish Prison was sentenced Wednesday to five years of probation.

Evelyn Tureaud, 22, of Kenner, pleaded guilty in December to malfeasance in office.

Tureaud, who worked at the jail’s Conchetta facility on Tulane Avenue, admitted to sneaking packages of contraband into the jail, including for an inmate she had fallen in love with.

She took bribes totaling at least $950 in exchange for the illegal items, according to court records.

Motorcyclist killed in St. Charles Parish

A motorcycle accident claimed the life of Wesley Price, 32, of Des Allemands, about 8:15 p.m. Tuesday, State Police said.

The crash occurred on U.S. 90 near La. 632 in St. Charles Parish.

Price was driving a 2009 Harley Davidson east on U.S. 90 at a high rate of speed when it struck the right curb of the bridge and he was ejected. He died at the scene.

Price was wearing a helmet at the time.

Man struck by bullet while walking

A 17-year-old man was walking about 9:30 p.m Tuesday at Green and Monroe streets in Hollygrove when he heard shots.

According to police, he was shot in the leg.

Three in St. Tammany arrested in car thefts

The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office arrested three male juveniles last week in connection with several vehicle burglaries and thefts in the Tammany Hills area of Covington over the past several weeks.

Detectives recovered several cellphones and a stolen firearm.

The suspects confessed to the burglaries and thefts. Two were released to the custody of their legal guardian, and the third was booked into the Florida Parishes Juvenile Detention Center.

Police arrest man accused of car theft

New Orleans police arrested Edward Pilot, 28, for allegedly stealing a car Tuesday.

Officers arrived in the 400 block of Conti Street about 3:50 p.m. and were told by the victim that he had seen a man driving his car away. When the victim yelled at him, the man got out of the car and fled on foot.

The officers broadcast a description of the man, and other units spotted Pilot. The victim identified him as the thief.

Woman raped in New Orleans East

A 21-year-old woman said she was raped Wednesday morning by a man she had met on social media, according to police.

The incident occurred about 1:45 a.m. in the 7000 block of Whitmore Place in New Orleans East.

Sheriff’s Office: Man caught stealing a car

Frank Molinario, 37, of Chalmette, was arrested Sunday after he was allegedly caught stealing a car by the owner.

The owner said he saw Molinario about 3:30 a.m. as he was getting out of the vehicle on West Beauregard Street in Chalmettte with a hat and clothing taken from inside it, according to the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff’s Office.

When he was spotted, he started running but was chased by the owner and a friend, and when deputies arrived, the trio were fighting in the street, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Bail was set at $20,500.

Accused shooter denied bail reduction

A Marrero man accused in the Christmas Eve shooting death of James Vaughn at Oakwood Mall was denied a reduction in bail Tuesday by Commissioner Paul Schneider of 24th Judicial District Court.

Gary Francois, 25, is being held on $750,000 bail in connection with the shooting, which occurred at 4 p.m. in the Terrytown mall’s Foot Locker store.

Investigators with the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office say surveillance footage from outside of the store shows François standing outside the Foot Locker, waiting for Vaughn. As Vaughn finished making a purchase, François allegedly walked into the store and fired at him three times.

Police say François was then seen running from the store into a neighboring shop before running outside to a parking lot as panicked shoppers left the mall.

Robber said to break phone in N.O. East

A 21-year-old man’s phone was stolen by an armed gunman in New Orleans East on Tuesday evening.

According to police, the victim and Chaz Walker, 20, were arguing over the cellphone. Walker then pulled a handgun and took the phone and broke it before fleeing.

The incident occurred about 5:30 p.m. in the 7100 block of Deanne Street.
