The man accused of killing a young mother and her daughter in New Orleans East this week was arrested in Florida after trying to commit another crime, Florida police said.

The Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office said Friday that Dwayne Martin, 25, was arrested in Milton, Florida, on Thursday after he threatened a homeowner with a hammer in an attempt to acquire some gas.

Martin is accused of killing his girlfriend, Walesha Williams, 25, and her 8-year-old daughter Paris, as well as shooting and injuring a 39-year-old woman, in a home in the 14000 block of Duane Road in New Orleans.

The Florida homeowner told police that she was sitting in her living room Thursday afternoon when she heard the porch door open. Martin was standing on the porch with a hammer and told the woman he needed gas.

The woman told Martin he needed to leave and grabbed the hammer from his hand, according to the Santa Rosa Sheriff’s Office.

He then ran out the back door and into the front yard, where he tried but failed to start the woman’s four-wheeler before fleeing.

Police established a perimeter around the area, and a police dog named Narco found Martin talking on his cellphone nearby. After a brief chase, Martin was arrested.

In addition to the murder charges that Martin faces in New Orleans, he was booked with armed burglary and resisting an officer in Florida.

On Tuesday, Williams’ 39-year-old friend made her way to a neighboring home after the brutal shooting spree to get help. She eventually led officers the home where Williams and Paris were shot, according to police.

The friend apparently had “played dead” as the shooter moved violently through the house, eventually shooting the child in the head. Martin also reportedly stole Williams’ cellphone and money.

After being convicted of four counts of resisting arrest with force, four counts of battery of a police officer, one count of simple escape and one count of resisting a officer, Martin spent six months in Orleans Parish Prison in 2012. In 2010, he also pleaded guilty to simple battery and was arrested on charges of burglary, theft and felony carnal knowledge of a juvenile. All of those charges were dropped.
