Boyfriend arrested in woman’s fatal shooting

Jefferson Parish authorities have arrested the boyfriend of a woman shot to death Tuesday evening in unincorporated Westwego.

Jarius Cole, 19, was booked with second-degree murder and a count of attempted second-degree murder in the death of Andrea Grant, 20, and the shooting of another woman.

Deputies responded about 5:40 p.m. to reports of two people shot in the 900 block of North Claiborne Parkway and found Grant’s body in a chair outside a home on the street, said Col. John Fortunato, a Sheriff’s Office spokesman.

The second victim, a 65-year-old woman, was shot once in the chest. Her condition, described as critical Tuesday night, had been upgraded Wednesday to stable, Fortunato said.

After the shooting, several people who were inside the home first told investigators that Grant was sitting outside with an unknown man when the shooting took place, Fortunato said. Witnesses also reported seeing a black vehicle heading south on North Claiborne immediately after the shooting, he said.

Witnesses later told detectives that in fact Cole was outside with Grant when the shooting happened.

Cole allegedly later confessed to investigators that he shot Grant over domestic issues.

Cole also allegedly said he tossed the gun away after the shooting. It has not been located, Fortunato said.

Investigators believe the other victim was inside her home when the gunshots were fired. It appears several projectiles came through the wall, with one of them striking her as she sat in her chair, Fortunato said.
