A series of spoken-word workshops for teenagers will begin with a gathering from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 10 at the Algiers Regional Library, 3014 Holiday Drive, New Orleans. The workshops will be held every other Thursday. At each one, teens will channel their creativity to write and perform original spoken-word pieces. Using model texts from local and national artists, teens will elevate their craft while building the young artist community.

The workshop is being presented by the New Orleans Public Library in partnership with New Orleans Youth Open Mic. The hosts are A Scribe Called Quess? of NOYOM and Team SNO.

STEAMPUNK COSTUME BALL: The League of GEARS will present a Steampunk Costume Ball from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sept. 11 at the Smith Library, 6301 Canal Blvd., New Orleans. Steampunk refers to a subgenre of science fiction that incorporates technology and aesthetic designs inspired by 19th century industrial steam-powered machinery. GEARS stands for Gentleman (and Lady) Entrepreneurs of Aerial Reconnaissance and Sundries, according to the group’s Facebook page. In addition to the costume ball, the League of GEARS will present a talk on Steampunk costuming; dance instruction will be provided by CONtraflow. This event is for adults 21 and older.

GRANDPARENTS DAY: For Grandparents Day, a special storytime and craft session will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sept. 12 at the Algiers Regional Library, 3014 Holiday Drive, New Orleans.

FINANCIAL FITNESS: Kemberley Washington, CPA, will present a financial fitness seminar from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, at the Algiers Regional Library, 3014 Holiday Drive, New Orleans. This seminar is a crash course on personal finance and will feature the BADGE system that Washington created in 2013. The BADGE system covers budgeting, asset management, debt reduction, goal setting and earning maximization. An additional seminar will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 26 at the Norman Mayer Library, 3001 Gentilly Blvd.
