State Police have yet to identify a driver whose Pontiac Grand Prix caught fire after hitting a tree Friday night in St. John the Baptist Parish.
The wreck happened about 8:00 p.m. Friday on U.S. 51, about 1.5 miles north of Interstate 10, Trooper 1st Class Melissa Matey of Troop B said Saturday in a news release.
The 1994 Pontiac was south on U.S. 51 when the car veered off the road to the right and started spinning. The back of the car smacked a tree and burst into flames. The driver died at the scene.
The driver was not wearing a seat belt, and speed was a factor, Matey’s release says. It is not known if the driver was impaired, and toxicology tests will be done during an autopsy.
