An aspiring rapper was gunned down in front of his Marrero home Tuesday night in a shooting that also left his brother wounded.
Police said Keyon Sonnier, 29, was shot around 8:30 p.m. in the 4000 block of Ames Boulevard. He was taken to University Medical Center and pronounced dead. Sonnier’s 35-year-old brother was wounded in the right shoulder, and police said his injuries are not expected to be life-threatening.
Police have not announced any suspects or a motive in the killing.
Sonnier went by the stage name Y.YO and had recently opened a music studio, according to his Instagram page.
Neighbor Brandie Cannova, 36, said she remembered him as a friendly neighbor who kept watch on her house when she left for vacation and showed great affection for his young daughter.
Cannova said that Sonnier once pulled her son out of a car when his great-grandmother, who was driving the vehicle, suffered from a seizure. As she and others watched on in shock, she said, Sonnier raced to help her son.
Cannova said she was not at home during the shooting but returned in time to see Sonnier’s brother, who was conscious and talking, being tended to by medics.
Deputies said they recovered a number of spent shell casings near the front of the house. They have asked anyone with information to call Jefferson Parish Homicide Detective Jean Lincoln at (504) 364-5300.
