• COMMUNITY GARDENS: Westbank Community Ministries at Faith Presbyterian Church, 2525 Apollo Ave., Harvey, now has a community garden. Two large beds were built and filled using young volunteers from Texas in July. The fall planting will start on Wednesday, Sept. 9, at 5 p.m. The community is invited to join in and share their knowledge and love of growing vegetables. Free nutrition classes will be offered beginning Sept. 22 at 6:30 p.m. LSU nutritionist Karen Walker will teach participants how to cook healthful food that is economical and delicious. The classes will take place Tuesday nights for six weeks. Westbank Community Ministries also invites everyone, ages 7 to 97, to attend a low-impact aerobics class on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. To register, call (504) 368-2525.
  • PUBLIC FORUM ON ISLAM: The imams of the New Orleans area invite the public to hear their presentation of the faith and tradition of Islam and its message of peace and goodwill. There will be a welcome by Archbishop Gregory Aymond. The public forum will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10, in Nunemaker Auditorium at Loyola University.
