Nursing home staffer found in woman’s bed

An employee of a West Bank nursing home was arrested Friday after he allegedly was found with his pants down while in the bed of a 78-year-old female resident of the home, the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office said.

Kenneth Whidden, 50, of Westwego, was booked on one count each of aggravated rape and sexual battery of the infirm after he allegedly admitted to “pleasuring” himself in the woman’s bed, said Col. John Fortunato, a Sheriff’s Office spokesman.

Whidden, a certified nurse’s assistant at Wynhoven Healthcare Center, 1050 Medical Center Blvd., Marrero, was discovered in the resident’s bed about 2:30 a.m. by another nurse who was making her rounds at the facility, Fortunato said.

While Whidden reportedly confessed to climbing into the woman’s bed and engaging in sexual activity with her, he could not explain why he did it, Fortunato said.

Wynhoven Healthcare Center is operated by the Archdiocese of New Orleans. A spokeswoman for the archdiocese did not return a message seeking comment.

Whidden has no prior criminal history, Fortunato said.
