Leonel Melendez, the Metairie native who was shot at an Orlando gay club nearly two weeks ago, came out of his coma this week and is recovering well, according to WWL-TV.

"I guess Thursday he came back to us,” his sister Lauri Melendez said. “He looked at me and said ‘Are you my sister?’ And I said, ‘Yes I’m your sister’. I said ‘I’m here for you.’"

Melendez was one of the dozens of people shot at Pulse Nightclub on June 12 in Orlando. He was shot in the head and leg. Fifty people in total were killed that night.

A fundraiser with friends and family was held on Sunday at Kamp bar in Harahan. All proceeds will be donated to the Melendez family for medical bills.
