The Advocate’s Walt Handelsman Wednesday was honored with a national award for digital journalism by Editor and Publisher, a trade publication for the news industry.
Editor and Publisher received more than 300 entries for its EPPY awards, a digital news contest in its 22nd year.
Handelsman was named the best cartoonist based on a sample of his print cartoons and digital animations.
The Advocate was named as a finalist for five digital journalism awards Wednesday by Editor …
Handelsman, who joined The Advocate in 2013, won Pulitzer Prizes for editorial cartooning in 1997 and 2007. He worked for The Times-Picayune from 1989 to 2001 and for Newsday in New York from 2001 until he returned to Louisiana.
In an era when newspapers expanded their scope from print to digital businesses, Handelsman became a leading innovator in his field, developing animations for the new digital audiences. They now appear on theadvocate.com.
The Advocate was a finalist for four other digital journalism awards from Editor and Publisher. There were no other Louisiana finalists.
