Globalstar Inc., the Covington satellite phone services provider, said Thursday it will acquire 20 percent of a Florida tech firm’s stock and gain access to its data compression software.

The deal will allow Globalstar to leverage Fort Myers, Florida-based Yippy Inc.’s data compression, optimization and security software. The software will give Globalstar customers access to “broadband-like” web content and data services.

Yippy will also be able to resell Globalstar services.
