A New Orleans man died on Interstate 10 early Saturday when he lost control of his car, careened across the median and hit another car and a truck, State Police said.
Kenneth C. Nolting, 56, was eastbound on I-10 near La. 641 in St. James Parish about 1:30 a.m. Saturday when his Nissan Altima veered off the road into the median and onto the cable barrier, Trooper 1st Class Jared Sandifer said in a news release.
The 1996 Altima rode the cable barrier for about a half-mile before reaching an opening, where it flew out of the median and into the westbound lanes of I-10, the release said.
Nolting’s car smashed into a Volkswagen Jetta, which spun the Altima into the path of a 2014 International box truck.
The driver of the Jetta, Blerond Oda, 26, of Merrillville, Indiana, suffered moderate to serious injuries and was taken to a hospital.
James Spears, 43, of Baton Rouge, the driver of the International, was not injured.
All the drivers were wearing seat belts, the release said.
A toxicology sample was taken from Nolting and will be tested for possible impairment, Sandifer said.
The three-vehicle wreck closed traffic on I-10 westbound for about three hours early Saturday.
