The person who was struck and killed last week as he tried to cross Airline Highway in Gonzales has been identified as James Grant, 77, of Gonzales, State Police said Tuesday.

The fatal crash happened shortly before 8 p.m. April 9 as Grant attempted to push a shopping cart east across the lanes of Airline Highway, also U.S. 61, just south of La. 74, according to a report from Louisiana State Police Troop A.

Rodney Marchand, 56, of Baton Rouge, driving a 2011 Ford Escape north on Airline, struck Grant, who was pronounced dead at the scene by the Ascension Parish Coroner’s Office, the State Police said.

Marchand was properly restrained and received only minor injuries. Impairment on his part is not suspected and he was not cited in the case, according to State Police. However, results of a toxicology sample taken from Marchand at the time of the accident are pending, State Police said.
