GONZALES – A Donaldsonville man was killed late Tuesday when his vehicle struck a parked dump truck in a construction zone on La. 30 in Ascension Parish, according to State Police.

The accident occurred just before 11:30 p.m. when Kirt P. Canova, 42, ignored and drove past a flag man on La. 30 eastbound near South St. Landry Avenue, State Police reported. Canova’s vehicle, a 2010 Nissan Altima, struck a 1998 Mack dump truck that was parked in the eastbound lane facing west inside the construction zone.

Canova was unrestrained at the time of the crash and suffered fatal injuries as a result, police said. It was unknown if he was impaired. A toxicology sample was taken from him and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.

The driver of the dump truck, Jason L. Buckley, 34, of Baton Rouge, was waiting in the truck to unload construction materials when the crash occurred. He was not injured.
