State and Ascension Parish rescue crews on Tuesday resumed the search for a boater who disappeared Monday night after his boat sank in Bayou Manchac, state wildlife officials said.

Allen Fitzgerald, 24, of Prairieville, and another man were traveling in a 12-foot bateau on the bayou in Ascension Parish about three to four miles upstream of the Amite River when the boat began taking on water, said Adam Einck, a spokesman for the state Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.

Fitzgerald’s passenger, who was in the front of the boat, jumped in the bayou before the bateau sank, but Fitzgerald remained in the back of the boat, Einck said in a news release Tuesday.

The boat had a small, 6-horsepower engine.

The passenger made it to shore and found a house where he called 911 for help, Einck said.

Agents with the DWF Enforcement Division, Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office and the St. Amant Fire Department began searching for Fitzgerald about 10 p.m. Monday but stopped at 3 a.m. Tuesday to wait for daybreak, Einck said.

According to the passenger, neither man was wearing a personal flotation device, Einck said.
