Federal firearms agents in New Orleans and a firearms industry trade association are offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of those involved in the burglary of an undisclosed number of pistols and revolvers from an Assumption Parish hardware store.

The U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives officials announced the reward Tuesday, more than two days after an unidentified man broke into Sagona’s True Value Hardware store, 6188 La. 1, in Paincourtville.

The store’s surveillance cameras show what appears to be a black man, 5 feet 8 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall, wearing light blue jeans, a brown hooded jacket and red baseball cap, sheriff’s deputies have said.

ATF Special Agent Kevin Moran, spokesman for the ATF’s New Orleans Field Division, said the man also appeared to be wearing something over his face, though he may have pulled the covering down at one point.

Sheriff’s deputies have said the man broke in about 11:25 p.m. Saturday and are asking the public to call in about anyone seen walking near the intersections of La. 70 and La. 308 or La. 1 between 11 p.m. and midnight Saturday.

Sheriff’s deputies, who were called about the burglary around 8:20 a.m. Sunday, said only that “several” guns were taken from the store’s gun department. The hardware store is a federally licensed firearms dealer, according to the ATF website.

Moran said the actual number of weapons is not being disclosed at this time due to the investigation. He said that only handguns were taken, primarily semi-automatic pistols and a few revolvers.

The ATF and the National Sports Shooting Foundation, the trade group, are splitting the $5,000 reward and the offer is part of a national initiative to keep guns from getting in the hands of criminals, the ATF said. NSSF matches ATF rewards in cases where guns are stolen from federally licensed firearms retailers.

Anyone with information on the burglary should call the ATF’s New Orleans office at (504) 841-7000 or (800) ATF-GUNS or the Sheriff’s Office at (985) 526-1627.
