An Assumption Parish sheriff’s deputy was fired Tuesday after he grabbed and tried to disarm a deputy who had responded to his home Sunday on a domestic disturbance complaint, Sheriff Mike Waguespack reported on his Facebook page.

Deputy Gary Ellis Jr., 30, 133 Daniel St., Pierre Part, had been drinking all night and got into an argument with his wife when he returned home, throwing her to the ground a number of times, leading to a call to the Sheriff’s Office at 2:30 a.m. Sunday, Waguespack said.

When the first deputy on the scene attempted to calm him down, Ellis confronted the deputy, grabbed her and attempted to grab her duty weapon, Waguespack said. Other responding deputies arrived on scene and took control of the situation.

Ellis, a four-year veteran of the department, was booked Tuesday in the Assumption Parish Detention Center on counts of domestic abuse battery, battery of a police officer and attempted disarming of a peace officer.

He was fired Tuesday, the sheriff said.
